Old-timers say the acme hotel was the oldest tavern on lbi. That’s quite a moniker. Betty and bird clutter bought it in the late 50s. Bird remembers a secret trap door where booze was covertly loaded during prohibition.
Society was changing. Young people were redefining their world. Bird and Betty’s became the spot for an animated crowd who loved live music until the last call.
They drove vans, treaded for clams, drank 25¢ rolling rocks, and started bands. There were cut-off shorts, serious foosball games, road trips, tube tops, and metal coolers of icy drinks. Clarence Clemons brought the stage to life. The bar would change hands over the decades, but it always embodied that attitude of youth – sunsets on the deck, great music, teen night, surf films… And up early to do it all over again.
