In Member Spotlight

Southern Ocean Chamber Close-up is a brief introspective on why our members do what they do. This year, for our Holidays Redefined program, we are highlighting participating members to share their seasonal specials, promotions, events and professional stories. Our Holidays Redefined program encourages shoppers to support local businesses throughout the holiday season. For more information on this program, visit:

South End Surf N Paddle, located in Beach Haven, is a classic board shop that sells a variety of SUP (stand up paddle) boards, surfboards, wetsuits, gear and apparel and shape many of their boards on site. In addition to their retail items, South End also offers SUP tours & lessons, surf lessons, sup yoga classes and ukulele lessons on Tuesday nights during the summer. They also showcase local board shapers, musical and old school surf movies, which are frequently seen playing on the walls of their store.

Owner Ken Gallant has been involved in the surf industry his whole life. “In 2008 a new sport was becoming popular, stand up paddleboarding. Many people were coming to me anyway to ask questions involving the sport, so I decided it was time to put myself on the other side of the counter and try to make a living,” he shared. Gallant loves being able to share what he’s passionate about with the community. “We interact with our customers on a personal level because we love to do the same sports that we promote including surfing, stand up paddleboarding, ukulele playing, surfboard shaping and sup yoga. These are things we would be doing even if we weren’t in business,” he added.

Gallant strives to make the surf store a happy and thriving gathering place for the beach community. Through the holiday season South End will be open Fri – Sun, 10 – 5 p.m. and will also open off-hours by appointment. On February 2, 2019, they will be hosting “The Polar Paddle” event! “Just because winter has rolled around doesn’t mean you can’t still sneak out on the water for some fun. Throw on your wetsuits and booties, a wool cap and join us for a winter paddle race in the frigid (hopefully not frozen) waters of Barnegat Bay,” Gallant said. The race course will go around Mordecai Island, either one lap (2 miles) or two laps (4 miles).
