Learn more about A-5433 and potential elimination of tips statewide
The recently introduced bill, A-5433 would reduce the tip credit and eventually eliminate it statewide by 2030. If passed, this will mandate that businesses pay employees the full minimum wage before accounting for tips.
In response, Southern Ocean Chamber is working with the leading state tourism organization, the New Jersey Tourism Industry Association to reach out to legislators on the impact it could have on the small businesses in our region and beyond. As it stands, employers are legally required to ensure that all tipped workers earn at least the minimum wage.
Under current law, if an employee’s tips combined with the tip credit do not meet the minimum wage, the employer must pay the difference to ensure the employee reaches the minimum wage. Many workers, such as restaurant servers, bartenders, bellhops, and valets, prefer these jobs for their flexibility and earning potential.
On Thursday April 10, there is a rally scheduled with state organizations. For more information, please visit here
