Make It Matter, A Message From Our CEO

Doing business with a dash of beach culture is what we do best and these next few weeks will bring thousands of additional customers relying on every type of service and experience our members provide. Our visitor center is here directing visitors and residents to not only all there is to do, but the advantage of using a member business to solve a problem or enhance their stay. Please make sure your updated material is here in time for the summer season, and upload your summer events to our website.

It may be a stretch to start discussing the fall and holiday season, but we are planning to bring an expanded and updated Chowderfest Weekend as well as Shop Small Saturday and Holiday Shopping program. We are putting things in place so they are ready to roll in September and we are looking forward to you being a part of it!

Wishing you a successful summer!

Lori Pepenella

Our members are celebrating the 29th Chowderfest and this year there has been much planning and expanding. “Everything we are doing is to showcase the local musical talent, restaurants and businesses” states Todd Elsasser, Chowderfest Coordinator. “The expanded footprint is a great way to showcase what our community can do.”

Proceeds from the Chowderfest have provided three decades of financial support to hundreds of local charities and events, as well as scholarships to Pinelands Regional, Southern Regional and Barnegat High Schools. Funds are also used to operate and maintain the fully staffed visitor center located in Ship Bottom, advertise the region out of the area to visitors and produce other events that generate proven economic impact such as the LBI Wedding Road Show and reinvestment to new programs such as Southern Ocean Made, Open for Business and Founded in Family.

The weekend begins with the free Merchant Mart that will have live music from 10 to 5 from Jimmy Brogan, White Rabbit and The Implusives. This year a dedicated Make Shift Row tent has been added, which brings a market space designed to inspire that will be filled with handmade products for sale. There will be more taps added too with custom beverage menu full of flavorful beers and hard ciders.  Attendees can spend the day with dozens of merchants to shop for end of season bargains, localized specialties and gourmet food. Expanded grounds include more seating and elbow room for everyone, a Southern Ocean Chamber Partner and Sponsor lounge, additional tent for merchants and a featured beer garden. Member rate is $250 per table with $200 for additional tables – to reserve space or for more information please contact Cindy at 609 494 7211 x 105 or

Join the best restaurants in the region as they square off for ticket holder votes with unlimited red, white and creative chowder samples. VIPs gain early access  to the tents at 10am to taste the chowders and view the decorative booths created by each competitor. In addition to coveted early entry, VIPs get the official 2017 VIP Shirt with purchase.  New this year is the Platinum VIP ticket which in addition to early entry and shirt, gives access to the new Beer Garden with big screen televisions and giveaways handed out by the Bud Girls. Platinum VIP level is limited to 150 tickets. General Admission begins at 11am.  Great chowder is accompanied by great live music, the line up scheduled to perform on Sunday are The Pickles, Ted Hammock and Jason Booth. Attendees can partake in the delicious food tent, grab a chair with added seating, avoid long lines with extra beer and cider taps, shop exclusive Chowdawear merchandise, vote and cheer on the winners at closing ceremonies scheduled at approx. 4pm. Tickets can be purchased online at or by contacting the Southern Ocean County Chamber at 609 494 7211. Tickets are also on sale at the chamber’s Visitor Center, 265 W Ninth Street, Ship Bottom, or via email at

The Southern Ocean Chamber is looking to make a difference and partner in a direct way for the 30TH ANNIVERSARY CHOWDERFEST and invites its 501c3 Non Profit members to apply to “CHOWDER FOR A CAUSE.” Local charities who meet the criteria can submit a request for 2018 program inclusion, the selected charity will be requested to send a representative to attend Chowderfest committee meetings along with many opportunities to raise awareness throughout the year. The big impact will come with a successful event, with a percentage of net proceeds going directly to the charity. Applications are due by 7/1/17. Organizations must be headquartered in Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce foot print with its primary mission being Health, Human Services or Environmental. Applications will be approved by our board and given to registered Chowderfest participating restaurants for final decision. Only one charity will be selected for the year.
