Founded on April 1, 1948 as the Surf City Volunteer Fire Company #1, the Surf City Volunteer Fire Company #1 & Emergency Medical Services (Surf City Fire & EMS) has provided the people of the Borough of Surf City and the North Beach section of Long Beach Township (north to Roxie Ave) with fire protection services for the past 71 years.
In 1989 the fire company became Surf City Fire & EMS with the addition of emergency medical services to the repertoire of fire and rescue services as part of the company’s commitment to the local community. Currently the volunteers of the company have five primary vehicles, two Basic Life Support Ambulances, one traditional fire engine, our primary Rescue-Engine which is designed to provide traditional fire suppression with a 28 foot “boomer” master stream to address the new challenges of fire suppression presented by the necessities of post-Sandy construction and rescue services including vehicle extrication for the entire island, along side a 5-ton Army transport vehicle for high water/weather emergencies.
Surf City Fire & EMS has also been part of the community outside of our response to calls for emergency service as the memories of summer dances, surfing movies, bingo, our annual Ladies Auxiliary Bazaar, pancake breakfasts with the Easter Bunny and Christmas Eve visits from Santa riding on a fire engine are vibrant memories for generations of families who call Surf City home whether it be year round or for a week or a day. These memories continue to grow with new generations as Surf City Fire & EMS has partnered with the Surf City Police Department to host the highly successful and anticipated celebration of Halloween – Trunk or Treat!
The emergency services of Surf City Fire & EMS, like all of Southern Ocean County, are made possible through the commitment and dedication of the all of our volunteers. The opportunities to join and volunteer in our mission to provide emergency services to Surf City and Long Beach Island are numerous- Firefighter, Emergency Medical Technician, Fire Police, our Ladies Auxiliary, administrative support, or help out with one of our fundraising activities. If, at this time, you are unable to volunteer, then be part of the Surf City Fire & EMS family by enjoying one the three pancake breakfasts (scheduled for 4/20) between Easter and July 4th; run in our annual “Get LBI Running” 5K; visit our summer Farmer’s Market on Monday mornings; visit our annual bazaar and flea market; shop, dine and support the businesses of Surf City and LBI thanking them for the gracious and generous support and encouragement to Surf City Fire & EMS throughout the years.
